From the original theatrical review:
Featuring a slew of cameos from famous gaming characters (many of them in a hilarious scene involving a support group for video game villains) and a plethora of inside jokes, as well as a surprisingly sweet and heartwarming story, Wreck-it Ralph is one of the best movies about gaming that Hollywood has produced yet, and while not directly based on a video game, Wreck-it Ralph is nonetheless a celebration of the gaming culture and the emotional attachment gamers feel toward their digital counterparts.
Disney has a reputation for delivering top-notch quality with their Blu-Ray releases, and Wreck-it Ralph continues this trend, offering an eye-popping level of detail in every frame. As Ralph wanders from one game to another, the environments change accordingly, and it becomes clear that the animators applied a painstaking amount of care to every surface.
Audio continues to uphold the Disney standard of excellence as well, and audiences familiar with the real-world games that influenced the film will find plenty of subtle touches to appreciate, right down to the ambient gunfire and distant explosions in Hero’s Duty. But despite a busy surround-sound mix, dialog remains clear and sharp throughout – an important component for an animated film.
Surprisingly, the selection of supplemental features is a bit lacking, which is rare for a Disney release. A handful of deleted scenes are included, with the option to view them with commentary from director Rich Moore – but where is the feature-length commentary for the film itself? There’s also a brief “making of” featurette that contains some interesting material, but probably could’ve been longer, and a collection of faux commercials for the games featured throughout the film.
Wreck-it Ralph remains one of the best Disney films in recent memory, and certainly gets my vote for best animated film of 2012. Despite a mediocre selection of extras, the audio and video quality are more than enough to justify adding this one to your collection.
