Clark Gregg plays Agent Coulson on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which saw its first season end in dramatic fashion thanks to a major game-changing crossover with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Gregg’s enormously likable personality bleeds over into his portrayal of Phil Coulson, resulting in not only starring in this spin-off, but spoiler: Coulson is now the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. Not a promotion to be taken lightly.

After getting to chat with Gregg last year at Comic-Con 2013 (read it here), this year with a full season behind us, I was able to get some fun quotes from Gregg in the press room and you can check them out below. Also, fans of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should stay tuned to NerdRep.com for part 2 of our S.H.I.E.L.D Comic-Con 2014 coverage featuring our interview with the adorably awesome Agents Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).

Clark-Gregg-SHIELD-SDCC14-03-e1406844868841On where Season 2 will find Agent Coulson:

“Time has passed. Everyone in the world seems to want to arrest Phil Coulson. S.H.I.E.L.D. is on the run. He may be the president of a country that no longer exists. Now we’ve got to rebuild it and make it better and not so riddled with evil traitors. The only way to do that seems to be to make some new friends, to root out some good old friends, and to do it all using kind of back-alley brass knuckles tactics that seem reminiscent of Cold War espionage.”

On potentially directing an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

“You know I would love to do that. I’m fascinated by watching it, the directors they got are so amazing. What they pull off, in terms of stunts, visual effects, acting, guest cast, in eight days and it only seems to be getting bigger each year. I watch the episodes as they come get made and I think ‘How could I possibly do this and still do my job?’ If ever there was an episode where Agent Coulson was kind of like, you know, in carbonite? [chuckles from journalists] …Thank you. That one I would love to try to do, but I’ve got my hands pretty full. That said, I’m going to spend any off-time I have trying to come up with another interesting indie project to do during my next hiatus.”

On scratching alien symbols into the wall in Season 1:

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. [laughs] Apparently that happened. Clark knows, Coulson doesn’t know about that. You know, he’s patched up his differences with Agent Melinda May, but he knows now that she was keeping secrets from him because she was tasked to be the plug-puller if all the side-effects she described to that operation started to manifest in Coulson. She was supposed to put him down. So I hope that graffiti he was doing doesn’t mean… you know, it’s going to be like the end of The Sopranos where it just all goes dark.”
