PHOENIX — The sold-out crowd at Ak-Chin Pavilion had withstood searing temperatures of more than 110 degrees on Sunday, but their enthusiasm for Slipknot’s return to the Valley of the Sun — part of the nationwide Knotfest Roadshow tour — hadn’t been diminished. “Let me see those hands in the fucking air!” bellowed frontman Corey Taylor as the curtain dropped and the band tore through the opening notes of sophomore album favorite “People = Shit.”
Sporting white jumpsuits and newly updated masks, the nine-piece outfit from Des Moines pummeled the crowd for more than 90 minutes with a setlist focused mostly on older material. More than half of the evening’s selections were pulled from the band’s first three albums, with “Spit it Out” and “Surfacing” among the selections from their self-titled debut, “Disasterpiece” and “The Heretic Anthem” paying homage to their follow-up release Iowa.
Despite a new record looming on the horizon, fans hoping for a preview of fresh material were left wanting, as the only new song featured during Slipknot’s set was the album’s lead single, “Unsainted.” Luckily, the wait for new music is almost over, as We Are Not Your Kind hits record stores and streaming platforms later this week.
