PORTLAND — After two years of pandemic-imposed delays, Deftones finally returned to the Rose City, kicking off the opening night of their North American tour with a sold-out show at Moda Center’s Theater of the Clouds. Vocalist Chino Moreno was all business, taking the stage clad in a zip-up hoodie and not even greeting the audience before launching into his signature scream, much to the delight of the packed house. The blistering 75-minute performance was surprisingly light on material from the band’s latest release, 2020’s Ohms — only the title track and album opener “Genesis” were performed — but offered some genuine surprises, including the live debut of “Lovers,” a B-side track from the 2002 “Hexagram” single.
French heavy metal outfit Gojira provided direct support, tearing through approximately half the selections from their seventh studio release, 2021’s Fortitude. The visual presentation might have seemed a bit scaled back for anyone familiar with Gojira’s sensational live shows, but the band’s signature sound was on full display, complete with crunchy guitar riffs, rapid-fire percussion and guttural roars from frontman Joe Duplantier.
